NEW ELITE COACHING POSITION CREATED FOR THE GOLD COAST BY SPRC/GURC

E-mail Print PDF

In a landmark and exciting decision the SPRC committee have joined with GURC to create the position of Elite Sculling Coach for the club.

This will mean that for the first time on the Gold Coast their is a professionally supported pathway for rowers of any age and demographic willing to commit to an elite program.

The squad will start training in May and continue toward the Australian National Rowing Championships in March 2010. Along the way crews will be formed for the Griffith University Paradise Regatta and Australian University Games where students among the squad will race as Griffith University.

"This decision begins to fill the gaping hole in rowing on the Gold Coast that has existed for the last 30 years. A lack of a professional and sustainable pathway to take talented and committed rowers from the Gold Coast community to the heights of Queensland and Australian selection. Today with the cooperation of GURC and SPRC we now offer that avenue, its very exciting" Dr David Houston said.

SPRC and GURC are now looking for both experienced rowing coaches and elite athletes interested in being part of the squad to come forward by sending an expression of interest to:

Learn to Row for Griffith University Students

Learning to row is a great traditional university activity. Infact rowing is the oldest recorded form of intervarsity sport dating back to the 1820s. It a great way to way to get fit and meet people and the GURC is the best university club when it comes to both.
