In the history of every university there are 3 events of unparalleled importance:
1) The Day the University is founded.
2) The Day the University Rowing Club is founded.
3) The Day the University appoints a full time rowing program coordinator.
Griffith University today has achiveved this historic hat trick with Mr Gordon Cameron appointed to head up the development of the GURC.
"I love building clubs from scratch to greatness." Mr Cameron exclaimed.
Gordo clearly has the runs on the board having taken Newcastle Grammar School from 8 to 90 rowers in 3 years. Along the way the much admired fledgling club notched up dozens of local, state and national titles and even got athletes into the Australian U19 team.
"Griffith University is widely acknowledged as a sleeping giant in rowing in Queensland. There is a large population of school and university rowers who historically have had no coach pursue their dreams with... Not any more. We will develop the champions right here in Surfers Paradise." Sir Gordon said.
With the generous support of Gold Coast City Council Gordon also plans to take this health and education message to 38 rowing schools in south east Queensland. An exciting and stimulating seminar is being devised where an energy analysis of a student on a rowing machine helps explain the various degree choices the students have.
"Being a passionate teacher for 30 years and a passionate rower my whole life this role excites me greatly. I can't wait to get the students excited about their university options, studying on the beautiful Gold Coast and maybe even rowing at the mighty Griffith Uni Surfers Paradise Rowing Club."
